Bees are flying insects, closely related to wasps and ants. They’re found on every continent except Antartica.
Bees are pollinators of flowering plants, including fruits and vegetables. They also limit the growth of insect populations that would otherwise overtake most crops and limit our food supply. Bees are a benefit us all.
In late summer and early fall when bee populations peak, the normal insect diet disappears and their feeding habits become a problem. During this time of year the yellow jacket has an appetite for much of the same food and drink as those consumed by humans.
Yellow jacket stings can result in a life-threatening situation, especially if the person is allergic to yellow jacket venom. Unfortunately, the yellow jacket has a smooth stinger and can sting multiple times, unlike the honey bee that has a barbed stinger and can only sting once.
Possible nest sites include: open spaces in walls, attics, porches, eaves, sheds and soil cavities – such as abandoned mouse nest and hollow trees.
If you have a problem with bees, we suggest that you Do Not attempt to kill or remove them yourself. Should you have a swarm or nest it’s recommended you contact a local bee professional for advice and/or removal.
